Yes, Orchestra Has Districts Too

Maybe you’ve wondered why all the orchestra kids were gone on November 10th. That’s because they were over at Centennial High School in Meridian, playing in front of high school orchestras from all over the state of Idaho.

The event, called “Festival”, is the equivalent of orchestra districts. It lasted about eight hours each day, with each school performing about three pieces. Bishop Kelly attended on the 10th, and played the following pieces: “Allegro” by Vivaldi, “Basse-Danse” and “Pavanne”by Warlock, and “The Evil Eye and the Hideous Heart” by Alan Lee Silva, inspired by the poem “The Telltale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. They also had lunch at Idaho Pizza Company, during their two hour-long lunch break. Some students say this was their favorite part of the event.

Freshman Hannah Pinkerton commented that “Being with so many people who play music and speak its language is so cool. I can’t wait to do it again.” She also stated, “My favorite part was getting coached. We really got into the music as a whole orchestra thanks to it.”

The members of the orchestra are as follows: Ali Putz on bass, Adabelle Hauck, Lorenzo Perez, and Trevor Knuff on cello, Mary Hankel and Lucy Wright on viola, Greta Cole, Zachary Cepek, Ava Cepek, and Danika Pothier on 2nd violin, and Hannah Pinkerton, Abby Anttonen, and Elena O’Riordan on the 1st violin.

Overall, Bishop Kelly performed well at Festival and the student musicians enjoyed the experience. The event did not have a winner: each school was scored separately. Bishop Kelly scored an 82 out of 100 overall, and received the title “Excellent”, the second-highest marking. The students, under the direction of Mrs. Cooper, were satisfied with their performance. At least, in the words of violist Mary Hankel, “It wasn’t a train wreck.”
