Swimming is a lot like flying. You’re moving your body and gliding through the air, but instead of air it’s water. This is exactly how the BK swim team felt last Thursday at their district competition! Many swimmers were nervous, but in the end they did an amazing job.

The Junior Varsity meet started during the school day. According to Sofia Kartel, a varsity team captain, districts were held at the Idaho Central Aquatic Center. They arrived at 7:15 am and began competing at 9:30. Most of the team were freshmen, but surprisingly there were only eight members on the Junior Varsity team.

Elizabeth Druist, a freshman, said “I wasn’t sure what to expect, or who was going to win because there were only eight of us, but that was enough for the boys’ and girls’ relay team.”

There wasn’t much confidence or expectations for this small team, but they surprised everyone that day with their times and expertise. By 2 pm both the boys and girls JV swim team won districts and brought back a beautiful trophy for Bishop Kelly!

The whole entire school was released at 2 pm thanks to Parent/Teacher Conferences, but the Varsity Swim Team was excused all day to prepare for the big meet. They started at 3:30 pm and the meet lasted late into the evening. There were 13 more people on Varsity than on JV, and seven teammates on Varsity and five on JV both qualified for state.

Lillian Brady, a freshman, comically commented “I hope someone pukes…in the pool so the meet is canceled.”

She emphasized how stressful districts had been for the team. Despite this, the majority of the team was determined to get into state. Freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors gave it their all and came out on top. In the end, both the boys and girls varsity teams won, bringing home two beautiful trophies for Bishop Kelly. During the competition, three district records were broken by Shae Stratton in the 200 IM, Lucy Penna in the 500 Free, and the Men’s 200 Free Relay made up by Jack Rubocki, Ben Rubocki, Jack Kartel, and Adam Hanson.

It was all hard work and determination. Coach Stratton has been known to say that “If swimming was easy it would be called football.” Come support Bishop Kelly’s Swim Team at their state competition this Friday and Saturday morning at the Boise West YMCA!
