We have all been in that position. The one where you have tried and tried to revise your essay for English or your Theology paper, but you can not seem to get that grade you are striving for. Well, do I have the solution for you!
The Writing Center is a place to receive help in developing your ideas, creating claims, finding evidence, expanding on commentary, revising drafts, and so much more. For any class, at any time, the Writing Center is one of the best resources Bishop Kelly has to offer.
The Writing Center consists of trained consultants who have been in the exact same situation as you, which makes them the perfect people to help you prepare for a writing task or revise a piece of written work. Catherine McGonegle, a senior consultant, loves working at the Writing Center because “It not only gives me the chance to help others, but I’m advising them from a perspective I was once in not too long ago.” As a student who might have even had the same teacher as you, the consultants know how to help you communicate your ideas in a clearer way.
There is a reason that teachers (not only English) reinforce the use of the Writing Center so much. Mrs. Jardine says that “A writer needs more than one set of eyes to look at a piece of work. If you need to improve a piece, it is not a lazy way to fix your mistakes. You are just getting help and further feedback from a trained student.” Especially if there are certain concepts and structures of writing that are new to you, the writing center is the best place to speed up that learning process.
When approaching an appointment, come prepared with your written work, no matter the stage, and be ready to read your essay aloud. Your consultant will be giving you tips, taking notes, and helping you edit along the way to make you a stronger writer. But most importantly, come with an open mind! Even if going to the Writing Center was not a choice you voluntarily made, remember that any feedback is good feedback. Making it a habit to go to the Writing Center results in improvement and growth. Also, keep in mind that Mrs. Armuth will be able to tell if you chose to go open mindedly or not when reading your essay.
You may walk into the writing center, but appointments are preferred. Using your Bishop Kelly Gmail account, use this google calendar link, select a time slot, enter your name, and save. It is as easy as that!
So what are you waiting for? Go book your appointment, and head to the 700 Wing in the office space next to Mrs. Reid’s classroom (look for the sign).
In addition, for all of my procrastinators out there, do not fret because The Writing Center is now available on Sunday through appointments digitally! So for those of you who waited until the weekend to work on your essay that is due first period, sign up for your appointment, so your essays will never be on the writing block again.
