Catching Up With Your Student Government

As Bishop Kelly finishes another month of its so far fabulous Diamond Year, the hustle and bustle of fall can leave many students with a feeling of whiplash. One group of the student body that had a particularly occupied fall was student government, specifically for the sophomore representatives who were in charge of homecoming. This article will reflect on the changes that were made during homecoming, and tell you more about student governments’ goals for the fall semester.

The sophomore representatives for student government started off the year by planning homecoming. Due to the later than usual timeframe of the dance, it was held in the Reg rather than the Laciando Plaza, where the dance is usually held. The prices of homecoming tickets were also raised from its usual ten dollars to fifteen, due to how much bigger the venue was to decorate. Sophomore class reps also hoped to raise money for homecoming that they could use for Prom next year.

One student government member, Sarah Musser, who is a varsity track and cross-country runner, justified this price raise by saying that, “If we raise ticket prices by a little bit now, we’ll make more money because so many people go to homecoming. Then next year for prom, our class will have a bigger budget and we can make sure prom ticket prices stay reasonable.”

Nonetheless, the change in venue and ticket price was a big change for Bishop Kelly students, and there was some contention. Regardless, many student government members believed the dance was successful. Alondra Tena, another student government member said, “Everyone looked so pretty and looked like they were having a great time!” Bea Grant, varsity soccer player and an active member of Pep Club and student government reflected that “It was nice to see our hard work pay off and everybody having a good time.” Tensei Thompson, who’s on the BK wrestling and football team, noted “The dance was a very enlightening experience!”

In future, the student government looks forward to planning Sadie Hawkins and hopefully  a school-wide pep rally before finals! Student government is of course always happy to take student suggestions for anything that could build school community, so make sure if you have any ideas to relay them to one of your grades’ respective members. Go Knights!
