Bienvenue en America!

Bishop Kelly welcomes their French exchange students at the Boise Airport.

During the week of September 29 – October 8, 34 students from Anglet, France visited Boise to work on their (already impressive) English skills. Bishop Kelly students studying French housed them for a week, and had the opportunity to not only make close friendships, but learn about a different culture as well. During Spring Break, BK correspondents will have the opportunity to reunite with their French friends, staying at their houses and shadowing them at school.

For a random week in October, it was a very fun one filled with many American activities such as TopGolf, pool parties, Haunted World, horseback riding, and shopping. French correspondents even shadowed their BK friends at school on Wednesday, getting the chance to see what American school was like and meet everyone on a Straight 7. Elizabeth Montgomery, a current senior, remarks on her correspondent Noa’s shadow day, saying “it was so fun to have Noa with me! She loved American high school; it was completely different from what she was used to.” During French classes, there was a Q and A period where BK students were given the time to ask their French friends what schooling overseas is like as well. It’s definitely a contrast, with 10 class periods, 3 foreign language classes (Latin, English, Spanish), and more career-focused training at an earlier age.

Another big difference between American and French high school is the athletics. French schools don’t necessarily have on-campus sports, so buying BK merch and supporting the football team in Emmett was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them. BK hosts have heard back from several of the French students, and they love wearing their BK hoodies and sweatpants to school in France to show off to their peers! It’s truly the little things in life, and the French do a great job at appreciating them.

Although the French students are greatly missed by their new friends, the BK students can’t wait to visit them again this Spring Break! Much thanks to Madame and French Club President, Elizabeth Montgomery, along with all the families for making such a fun and inspiring week possible!
