Student Council is hosting an event you won’t want to miss! On April 22nd, from 12-2 p.m. they are hosting a donating event to close out their fundraising for a communi service trip to Guatemala, in which they build water filters. Games, food trucks and music will be lined up on the track behind the school for students to enjoy.
Many of the Student Council members are taking a trip this summer to Guatemala to develop and distribute filtration systems and build a water catchment system for women and children living in communities in the country.
Approximately 771 million people lack access to clean water, which is 1 in every 10 people on the planet. Because of this, 16,000 people die each week from water related illnesses and disease, which is astonishingly more than those who die in all forms of violence, including war and mass shootings.
Vivid Roots, an Idaho based nonprofit organization that Student Council is partnering with for their trip, recognizes the need for water in low income communities to keep kids safe and allow for them to attend school. Different yearly projects allow for them to address food, hygiene and other human needs in different communities in Guatemala and Ecuador. The more donations they have, the bigger the project they can tackle. Previously, they have even been able to renovate 14 schools, 2 health centers, 17 bathrooms, and 56 water filtration systems, impacting over 5,000 people.
Student Council has named the event the “water walk” and is hosting it on the track to signify the thousands of miles women and children make everyday for clean water. It is estimated they track an average 105 miles per month for sanitary water. Lydia Kamann, a sophomore representative for Student Council, says “this is a fun event for you and your family and friends, and one where we can raise money for clean water!”
