“Every day is a fashion show, and the world is your runway” – Coco Chanel. The world of fashion is to be interpreted by those embodying it. Bishop Kelly, in a unique manner, exemplifies its own world of style, and who is more reliable in defining its clothing trends than the Bishop Kelly fashion club? Fashion club co-founder, Ava Burnett, summarizes the clothing fads at Bishop Kelly as “preppy” and “fun”, and this style, she describes, is a direct result of “the business casual feel and dress code.” Mrs. Mouw, fashion club advisor, concurs and similarly explains how the dress code encourages a “classy” taste in the Bishop Kelly clothing trends. Both fashion experts describe fashion and style at Bishop Kelly as a way the community expresses itself and how individuals exemplify their personality; however, these ladies do have a limit to which their fashion sympathy exists. When asked which Bishop Kelly trends shouldn’t be as prominent, Ava expressed her dislike towards boys’ buzzed and bleached hair while, Mrs. Mouw, saw a different fashion flaw and conveyed her opinion that the wearing of crop tops lacks a classy quality. Although these trends can be seen throughout the modern fashion world there are many in agreement, including the queen of polished modern style, Victoria Beckham, who “admits she also ‘doesn’t understand’ crop tops.”
Additionally in the world of modern fashion, vintage is considered “on the rage” as it was in the top 10 trends in 2022 according to Teen Vogue and, within the fashion club, Ava Burnett expresses her fondness towards the trend by explaining how “cool [it is] to bring in old style.” Likewise, Mrs. Mouw shared similar feelings towards this trend and other modern styles; however, she feels that, ironically, when dressing in vintage, it needs “to be kept modern.” No matter the opinions on style or trends, both Burnett and Mouw share the same belief that clothing choice is a way to express individuality. These fashionistas extend an invite to whoever wants to build community through fashion, as well as expand their style identity. To conclude, Burnette wants to give two pieces of advice to the Bishop Kelly community, first she emphasizes that you need to “be yourself through your style” and finally, a bit humorous, she added, and “match your shoes to a part of your outfit, its cute!”
