With this year’s soccer season coming to an eventful end, Bishop Kelly can be proud of the achievements of both its boys and girls soccer teams. After a hard-fought tournament and a defeat in PKs during the state final, the boys came home with an academic state championship and 2nd place state trophy. The girls brought home a state championship after a 2-0 win in the state final.
In an emotional statement, junior midfielder Landan Schweiger says he felt “sad” when the boys lost, and “happy” when the boys won. Heartfelt words from a deeply grieving man. Another teammate, holding back tears, let his raw emotion show in stating “I’m honestly just happy we got this far”. Team manager, coach, and longtime supporter of BK soccer Daniel San-Martino had this to say about the season, “Who ordered a stack of onion rings the final is tomorrow morning”. If we can excuse some slight author bias, the onion rings were delicious.
The Bishop Kelly boys entered the tournament seeded 8th. After an uneventful overtime goal from midfielder Andrew Nguyen, Bishop Kelly upset the #1-seeded Sandpoint and advanced to the semifinals. The semifinals saw three brilliant goals from forward Colton Crawford and midfielder Noah Larson to lead the boys to another suspiciously effortless 3-0 victory over a higher-seeded Blackfoot team. In the finals of the tournament, Bishop Kelly and Caldwell would meet for the third time this year. In all three previous meetings, Caldwell came out on top (probably rigged, irrelevant wins). However, this meeting would see the brilliant, Mourinho-esque tactic from Bishop Kelly to just follow their best player. This tactic, reminiscent of the great coaches of European soccer and compounded by a shut-down defensive performance from midfielder Allan Huerta, would keep Caldwell scoreless for the first time this year. Penalty Kicks would follow this hard-fought battle. What happened next isn’t important, and as they say, “First is the worst, second is the best”.
