They’re Loud, They’re Proud, They’re Freshmen

High school is one of those things that people say you’ll remember forever. It’s a time to make new friends, excel in subjects we’re interested in, and create memories. But, for first-year students, the start of a new school year can be terrifying.

Every year, Bishop Kelly High School holds an orientation for incoming freshmen. This year, it was held on August 8-9. New students are split into groups, giving them the chance to interact with each other and get familiar with other kids they’ll see in class.

Some activities for freshmen included Never Have I Ever, Would You Rather, and, the most popular one, softball. For this specific activity, students were put into two teams with no further instructions other than just to play and have fun. It’s a great way to meet new people and get a taste of Bishop Kelly sports.

However, the start of high school can also be a little nerve-racking. Many freshmen shared their anxiety about new classes, especially speech. Although BK is a school that encourages learning, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any fear of failing. Multiple students expressed their fear of doing poorly in their new classes.

But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any excitement on the first day of school. Kate MacDonald, an incoming freshman at Bishop Kelly, explained that she was thrilled to meet new people, especially since she came from a Christian school. Another first-year student, Alex Mihalache, is eager to go to a bigger school with more students.

But for some freshmen, a new environment isn’t the only thing they look forward to at Bishop Kelly. Some freshmen, such as Kiara Teran, are excited to learn new things and expand their knowledge. The Club Fair is also a chance for freshmen to explore more possibilities while on the Bishop Kelly campus. Held on September 15th, the Club Fair was an event for all students to look at the multitude of clubs that Bishop Kelly offers. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and try something new!

Bishop Kelly High School can be a big change for new students, but it has numerous opportunities and activities that can help a person grow in so many ways. So, good luck to all the freshmen and new students at Bishop Kelly this year!

I’m a Junior here at BK and am an editor and writer in the Bishop Kelly newspaper. I love spending time outside, especially hiking, biking and backpacking. Besides being outside, I spend far too much time reading.
