Everybody Reads at Bishop Kelly

As the 2022–2023 school year rolls in, so does the BK tradition: schedule change! Due to the Covid pandemic in early 2020, Bishop Kelly had to adopt a new schedule to limit exposure among students. In the 2020–2021 school year, this took the place of an A/B block schedule. There were seven classes per semester, “A” days had four courses a day, and “B” days had three; A/B days would swap every day. This system, while passable, would create days that would start late and end early, creating more than an hour of wasted time. The current schedule addresses these issues with “flex” time. Flex time is a 40-minute “period” placed before lunches on Tuesday and Thursday; the new ER Time is a minor change from the prior flex schedules. Instead of an extra “Community Time”—a period that would encourage students to build a sense of community with one another—ER Time will incorporate itself into the schedule. ER Time allows BK students to not only read more but develop their reading skills as well.

Now that you know what ER time is, what should you do? The start of the year will be slow, especially for freshmen, so familiarize yourself with BK: learn how the library works, check out library recommendations, read an English class book, and, most importantly, have fun.

Welcome, or welcome back, to Bishop Kelly!
